KCET 2027 — Preparation Guide With 50% Board Weightage

KCET 2027 guide for Karnataka PUC students: 180-question pattern, how the 50:50 rank works, 2026 round 2 CSE ranks, and a plan that protects your PUC marks.

In short: KCET is Karnataka's engineering entrance test, run by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). The 2027 notification is expected in January 2027 and the exam around April, but neither is confirmed. The expected pattern is 60 questions per subject, 80 minutes per paper, with no negative marking. Your rank is a combination of KCET marks and 2nd PUC marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, reported at 50:50. That means every PUC mark counts as much as an entrance mark, so this guide plans KCET and PUC together.

Last updated: October 28, 2026. The exam date and pattern will be updated when KEA publishes the 2027 notification.

How the Rank Works

Several sources say KEA combines 50% of your KCET marks with 50% of your 2nd PUC marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (or the relevant subjects for other courses) to prepare the merit rank. Kalvium adds that counselling uses this published rank, not the raw KCET score. A Propelld summary mentions normalisation of the board marks, and I could not find the exact method.

An illustration of the trade-off

This is my arithmetic under a simple assumption: KCET out of 180 and PUC PCM out of 300 are each converted to 100 and then averaged. KEA's real normalisation may differ, so use it only to see the idea.

KCET (out of 180)PUC PCM (out of 300)Combined score
15027086.67
15024081.67
12028580.83
12024073.33
16525588.33

Two lessons come out of it:

  • Under this assumption, one KCET mark is worth about 0.28 points and one PUC mark (out of 300) about 0.17. So an extra KCET mark moves your score more than an extra board mark, but you have 300 board marks to earn and only 180 entrance marks.
  • A strong KCET with weak boards (120 with 285 gives 80.83) lands near a weaker KCET with strong boards (150 with 240 gives 81.67). Neither can carry the other alone.

Pattern

SubjectQuestionsMarksTime
Physics606080 minutes
Chemistry606080 minutes
Mathematics (Biology for other courses)606080 minutes

Per SciAstra, Physics and Chemistry are common, and you take Mathematics or Biology depending on your course. The paper is expected in English and Kannada. Careers360 says the question paper is available after the exam, and KEA releases a provisional answer key with an objection window.

That is about 1.33 minutes per question. With no negative marking, leave nothing blank.

What Rank Gets You What: Round 2, 2026

Careers360 reported the KCET 2026 round 2 provisional allotment for the general merit (GM) category on August 24, 2026.

CourseOpening rankCollege at openingClosing rank
Computer Science and Engineering285R.V. College of Engineering, Bengaluru2,82,226
AI and Machine Learning424R.V. College of Engineering, Bengaluru2,82,477
Electronics and Communication584R.V. College of Engineering, Bengaluru2,82,306
Electrical and Electronics961R.V. College of Engineering, Bengaluru2,82,075
Information Science2,761M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology2,82,548

Read these carefully:

  • The opening rank is the best rank that got a seat in that course in round 2, not what a popular college needs.
  • The closing rank near 2.82 lakh shows that seats were still being allotted at very high ranks. Most of those seats are in colleges with low demand.
  • This is provisional round 2 data. Final cutoffs depend on the round and on category, so check KEA's cutoff list.

A Shiksha summary says a rank under about 500 was required for CSE at RVCE, and ranks of roughly 1,000 to 5,000 for CSE at UVCE or BMS. That is a coaching-site summary with a wide range, so use it only as a rough guide, and compare with the round data above.

Eligibility (Engineering)

Careers360 says the recent rules required Class 12 or 2nd PUC with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Electronics or Computer Science as one optional subject, along with the prescribed aggregate marks and Karnataka eligibility clauses. Read the 2027 brochure for the exact aggregate and domicile rules.

Syllabus

KCET follows the 1st and 2nd PUC syllabus of the Department of Pre-University Education, according to SciAstra and Careers360. SciAstra expects the 2027 syllabus around the fourth week of January 2027. That means:

  • Your Class 11 (1st PUC) chapters matter as much as Class 12. Careers360's tips say the same.
  • Learn the Karnataka PUC textbooks, since chapters and emphasis can differ from other boards.

For chapter marks inside the PUC exam, see our Karnataka PUC Physics, Chemistry and Maths weightage guides. The entrance test and the board exam reward the same chapters, so one pass of study helps both.

Plan: KCET and PUC Together

PUC exam dates for 2027 are not part of this research, so build the plan around phases, not dates.

PhaseFocusDaily routine (suggestion)
Now to the PUC examsPUC-first. Board marks are half the rank3 hours of PUC study with KCET-style MCQs on the same chapter
After the PUC examsKCET-only sprint4 to 5 hours: timed papers, error review, formula revision
Final two weeksLight revisionOne timed paper every second day, error notebook, sleep

Karnataka also runs a second PUC exam. Our guide on the PUC Exam 1 and Exam 2 strategy explains how to use it. Check how it fits your KCET dates once the notification is out.

Study routine for the MCQ format

HabitWhat to do
Chapter practiceAfter each PUC chapter, do 30 timed KCET-style MCQs
Time checkAim for under 80 seconds per question
Error notebookLog every mistake by cause: concept, calculation or misread
Mock papersSolve KEA's earlier papers under exam timing, then review the answer key
GuessingNo negative marking is expected, so mark every question

Books

Careers360 advises NCERT and Karnataka PUC textbooks as the base, especially for Chemistry, then one question bank per subject and previous papers. Finish what you start, since changing books midway wastes revision time.

Compare Before You Choose

KCET is only one route. If you also sit JEE Main, the JEE Main preparation guide and the Karnataka-specific JEE and NEET plan show how to share time. Students from other boards can read our state-board bridge guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is KCET 2027?

Not announced. Careers360 expects the notification in January 2027 and the exam in April 2027. In 2026 the exam ran on April 23 and 24. Wait for KEA before booking anything.

How is the KCET rank calculated?

Several sources say KEA uses 50% of your KCET marks and 50% of your 2nd PUC marks in the relevant subjects, and that counselling uses this combined rank. I could not open the KEA brochure, so check the 2027 brochure for the exact method.

Is there negative marking in KCET?

The recent pattern had none, per SciAstra and Careers360, so +1 for each correct answer and no deduction. KEA will confirm the 2027 rule, so attempt every question unless the brochure says otherwise.

What is the KCET exam pattern?

Expected: 60 questions in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (or Biology), 80 minutes per subject paper, offline OMR format, English and Kannada. Treat this as expected until the 2027 notification.

What rank do I need for CSE?

In round 2 of 2026, the best general-merit CSE rank allotted was 285 at RV College of Engineering, while the last allotted rank was about 2.82 lakh at a low-demand college. A Shiksha summary puts RVCE CSE under about 500 and UVCE or BMS CSE at roughly 1,000 to 5,000. Final cutoffs vary by round and category.

Do my PUC marks matter?

Yes. If the 50:50 rule holds in 2027, your PUC marks carry as much weight as your entrance marks. Plan PUC study first and shift to a KCET sprint after the board exams.
