MP Board 2027 New Pattern — No Choice in 2 Mark Questions

MPBSE changed its 2026-27 pattern: 2-mark questions now have no internal choice. What changed, which subjects are affected, and how to prepare.

In short: MP Board (MPBSE) removed internal choice from 2-mark questions starting 2026-27. Previously, students could attempt any X of Y in the 2-mark section. Now all 2-mark questions are compulsory. This means you can no longer skip weak topics in this section. Broader syllabus coverage is now essential.

What Changed — The Core Reform

MP Board announced this pattern change for the 2026-27 academic year. The change applies to both Class 10 (High School) and Class 12 (Higher Secondary) examinations.

Old Pattern (up to 2025-26)

In the 2-mark section:

  • Students were given 8-10 questions
  • Instruction: "Attempt any 5" or "Attempt any 6"
  • Students could skip their weakest topics

New Pattern (2026-27 onwards)

In the 2-mark section:

  • All questions are compulsory
  • No "attempt any X" instruction
  • Every 2-mark question must be answered

Which Subjects Are Affected

The change applies to all subjects in Class 10 and Class 12. The most impactful subjects:

Class 10

Subject2-Mark Questions (New)Old (with choice)
Science8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8
Maths8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8
Social Science8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8
Hindi6 compulsoryAttempt any 4 of 6
English6 compulsoryAttempt any 4 of 6
Sanskrit6 compulsoryAttempt any 4 of 6

Class 12

Subject2-Mark Questions (New)Old (with choice)
Physics8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8
Chemistry8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8
Biology8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8
Maths8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8
Accountancy8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8
Economics8 compulsoryAttempt any 5 of 8

Why This Change Matters

Before: You Could Skip Weak Topics

If you were weak in Chapter 5 and Chapter 8, you could simply skip those 2-mark questions and attempt the ones from chapters you knew well.

Example (old pattern):

  • 8 questions given, attempt any 5
  • You skip Q3 (Chapter 5) and Q7 (Chapter 8)
  • You attempt Q1, Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6 — all from chapters you know
  • Result: 10/10 in 2-mark section despite weak chapters

After: You Must Answer Everything

Now you must answer all 8 questions. If you're weak in Chapter 5 and Chapter 8, you still have to attempt those questions.

Impact:

  • Students who relied on selective preparation will lose marks
  • Broader syllabus coverage is now mandatory
  • Even "small" chapters cannot be ignored

Preparation Strategy for New Pattern

Strategy 1: No Chapter Can Be Left Completely Unprepared

The old strategy of "I'll skip Chapter X and attempt other questions" no longer works for 2-mark questions.

What to do:

  • Go through every chapter in the syllabus
  • For each chapter, prepare at least 3-4 key definitions, formulas, or short answers
  • Even if you can't do long answers from a chapter, prepare 2-mark level content

Strategy 2: Focus on 2-Mark Level Content First

2-mark questions test:

  • Definitions
  • Short explanations (2-3 lines)
  • Simple formulas with one application
  • Differences between two concepts (2-3 points)
  • Short numerical (1-2 steps)

For each chapter, prepare:

  • 2-3 key definitions
  • 1-2 important formulas
  • 1 short difference/comparison
  • 1 simple numerical (if applicable)

Strategy 3: Use the Blueprint

MPBSE releases a blueprint (marks distribution) for each subject. The blueprint shows which chapters have 2-mark questions.

Download from: mpbse.nic.in → Blueprints → 2026-27

Use the blueprint to identify which chapters will definitely have 2-mark questions and prepare those first.

Strategy 4: Practice All 2-Mark Questions from Previous Papers

Previous year papers (2020-2025) show the type of 2-mark questions asked. Even though choice is now removed, the question types remain similar.

Practice: Solve all 2-mark questions from 5 years of previous papers. This covers most possible question types.

Time Management in Exam — New Pattern

With all 2-mark questions compulsory, time management changes:

Old approach

  • Read all 8 questions → pick 5 → answer 5 (10 minutes)

New approach

  • Must answer all 8 → allocate 2 minutes per question → 16 minutes for 2-mark section

Total time allocation (3-hour paper):

SectionQuestionsTime
MCQ (1 mark)88 minutes
2-mark (compulsory)816 minutes
3-mark6 (attempt 4)24 minutes
4-mark5 (attempt 3)24 minutes
5-mark5 (attempt 3)30 minutes
Review + writing—38 minutes
Total140 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the no-choice rule apply to all sections or only 2-mark?

Only the 2-mark section has been made compulsory. Higher-mark sections (3-mark, 4-mark, 5-mark) still have internal choice. Check the official blueprint for your subject.

What if I don't know the answer to a 2-mark question?

Write whatever you know — even a partial answer. 2-mark questions are short — even 1 correct point may get 1 mark. Never leave a question blank.

Where can I get the official blueprint for 2026-27?

Download from mpbse.nic.in → Examination → Blueprint 2026-27. The blueprint shows marks distribution for each chapter.

Does this change apply to Class 9 and 11 as well?

The announced change is for Class 10 and 12 board exams. Class 9 and 11 are school-level exams — check with your school for their pattern.

Are previous year papers still useful for preparation?

Yes. The question types for 2-mark questions are similar — only the choice has been removed. Previous year papers are still the best preparation resource.

Where can I check the latest official information?
