In short: NEP 2020 introduced a 4-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) with multiple exit points — you can leave after 1, 2, 3, or 4 years with different certificates/degrees. DU implemented it from 2022-23. Most students still exit at 3 years. The 4th year leads to a research-oriented Honours with Research degree. This guide explains what FYUP is, which colleges offer it, what each exit gives you, and whether the 4th year is worth it.

What Is FYUP? The NEP 2020 Change
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 replaced the traditional 3-year undergraduate degree with a 4-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) with multiple entry and exit points.
The Old System (Pre-NEP)
- 3-year B.A./B.Sc./B.Com degree
- No exit options — leave early = no degree
- Honours degree = 3 years with specialisation
- No research component at undergraduate level
The New System (NEP 2020 FYUP)
- 4-year programme with 4 exit points
- Each exit gives a recognised qualification
- 4th year = research-oriented Honours with Research
- Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) allows credit transfer

The 4 Exit Points — What You Get at Each Stage
| Year | Exit Qualification | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| After Year 1 | UG Certificate | Basic certificate. Limited use. Not a degree. |
| After Year 2 | UG Diploma | Diploma-level qualification. Better than certificate. |
| After Year 3 | Bachelor's Degree (3-year) | Standard undergraduate degree. Same as old system. |
| After Year 4 | Bachelor's Degree with Honours/Research | Research-oriented degree. Better for PG/research. |
Year 1 Exit — UG Certificate
- Awarded if you complete Year 1 and choose to leave
- Recognised qualification but limited practical value
- Useful if you need to leave due to personal circumstances
- Most students don't use this exit
Year 2 Exit — UG Diploma
- Awarded after completing 2 years
- More substantial than certificate
- Useful for vocational/skill-based careers
- Most students don't use this exit either
Year 3 Exit — Bachelor's Degree (Standard)
- This is what most students do — same as the old 3-year degree
- Fully recognised for jobs, PG admission, government exams
- 78% of DU's first FYUP cohort chose to exit at Year 3 in 2025 (the cohort that enrolled in 2022-23 and completed 3 years)
- Equivalent to the old B.A./B.Sc./B.Com Honours

Year 4 Exit — Honours with Research
- The new addition under NEP 2020
- Includes a research project/dissertation in Year 4
- Better preparation for M.Sc./M.A./PhD
- Equivalent to an integrated research foundation
- Only ~22% of DU's first FYUP cohort continued to Year 4 (the full 4-year batch graduates in 2026)
Which Colleges Offer FYUP in 2027?
Delhi University (DU) — Fully Implemented
DU was the first major university to implement FYUP from 2022-23. All DU colleges now offer the 4-year programme.
DU FYUP key facts:
- All 90+ DU colleges offer FYUP
- Admission through CUET
- Year 4 available in most departments
- Research project mandatory in Year 4
Central Universities — Mostly Implemented
Most central universities have implemented or are implementing FYUP:
| University | FYUP Status |
|---|---|
| Delhi University | ✅ Fully implemented (2022-23) |
| JNU | ✅ Implemented |
| BHU | ✅ Implemented |
| Hyderabad University | ✅ Implemented |
| Jamia Millia Islamia | ✅ Implemented |

The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) — What It Means
NEP 2020 introduced the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) — a national digital repository where your academic credits are stored.
How ABC Works
- You earn credits at one institution
- Credits are stored in your ABC account (linked to Aadhaar)
- You can transfer credits to another institution
- You can "re-enter" a programme after an exit
Practical Example
- You complete Year 1 at DU (exit with UG Certificate)
- You take a gap year to work
- You re-enter Year 2 at a different university
- Your Year 1 credits are recognised
This is the theory. In practice, credit transfer between institutions is still being worked out. Not all universities accept credits from all other universities.

3-Year Degree vs 4-Year Degree — Honest Comparison
For Jobs (Private Sector)
| Aspect | 3-Year Degree | 4-Year Degree |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Same | Same |
| Salary | Same starting salary | Marginally higher in some companies |
| Time to job | 1 year earlier | 1 year later |
| Employer preference | No preference currently | No preference currently |
Verdict: For most private sector jobs, there is no difference between a 3-year and 4-year degree. Employers care about skills, internships, and performance — not whether you did 3 or 4 years.
For Government Jobs
| Aspect | 3-Year Degree | 4-Year Degree |
|---|---|---|
| UPSC eligibility | ✅ Eligible | ✅ Eligible |
| SSC/Banking | ✅ Eligible | ✅ Eligible |
| State PSC | ✅ Eligible | ✅ Eligible |
| Age advantage | 1 year younger when applying | 1 year older |
Verdict: 3-year degree is better for government jobs — you start attempting exams 1 year earlier, which matters given age limits.
For Postgraduate Admission (M.A./M.Sc./M.Com)
| Aspect | 3-Year Degree | 4-Year Degree |
|---|---|---|
| PG eligibility | ✅ Eligible | ✅ Eligible |
| Research preparation | Standard | Better (Year 4 research project) |
| PhD eligibility | Standard | Better positioned |
| IIT/IISc M.Sc. | Standard | Slightly better profile |
Verdict: 4-year degree is better for research/PG — the Year 4 research project gives you a head start.
For Study Abroad
| Aspect | 3-Year Degree | 4-Year Degree |
|---|---|---|
| UK/Australia PG | ✅ Accepted | ✅ Accepted |
| USA PG (MS/MBA) | ✅ Accepted | ✅ Accepted |
| Research programmes | Standard | Better profile |
| Scholarship eligibility | Standard | Slightly better |
Verdict: Both are accepted abroad. 4-year degree may give a slight edge for research-focused programmes.
The Real Reason Most Students Exit at Year 3
DU's data shows 78% of the first FYUP cohort (enrolled 2022-23) chose to exit at Year 3 in 2025. Why?
Reason 1: No Clear Advantage for Most Careers
For most careers — private sector jobs, government exams, MBA — a 3-year degree is sufficient. Spending an extra year doesn't change outcomes significantly.
Reason 2: Opportunity Cost
One extra year = one year of salary foregone. For students from middle-income families, this is significant.
Reason 3: PG Admission Timing
Many students want to start their Master's degree at 21-22. A 4-year degree means starting PG at 22-23.
Reason 4: Uncertainty About Year 4 Quality
Year 4 research projects vary significantly in quality across departments and colleges. Some departments have excellent research supervision; others don't.
Reason 5: Government Exam Age Limits
UPSC allows attempts until age 32 (general category). Starting 1 year later means 1 fewer attempt.
Who Should Do the 4th Year?
Do the 4th Year If:
- You want to pursue a PhD or research career
- You're targeting IIT/IISc/top university for M.Sc.
- You want to study abroad for a research-focused Master's
- Your department has strong research supervision
- You have a specific research interest you want to explore
Stick to 3 Years If:
- You want to start working as soon as possible
- You're targeting government exams (UPSC, SSC, banking)
- You want to do an MBA (3-year degree is sufficient)
- You're not sure about research
- You want to start PG at a younger age
FYUP and Integrated Programmes — Don't Confuse Them
Some students confuse FYUP with integrated programmes. They're different:
| Programme | Duration | What It Is |
|---|---|---|
| FYUP (NEP) | 4 years | UG degree with research option |
| Integrated B.Sc.-M.Sc. | 5 years | UG + PG combined |
| Integrated B.A.-M.A. | 5 years | UG + PG combined |
| Integrated B.Tech-M.Tech | 5 years | UG + PG combined |
| B.Tech (regular) | 4 years | Engineering UG (always was 4 years) |
FYUP is not an integrated programme. It's a 4-year UG degree with a research component in Year 4. It does not include a Master's degree.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 4-year degree compulsory or optional?
Optional. You can exit after Year 3 with a standard Bachelor's degree. The 4th year is your choice. No university forces you to complete Year 4.
Is a 3-year degree from FYUP the same as the old 3-year degree?
Yes. A 3-year exit from FYUP gives you a Bachelor's degree that is equivalent to the old 3-year Honours degree. It is fully recognised for jobs, PG admission, and government exams.
Can I do a Master's degree after a 3-year FYUP exit?
Yes. A 3-year FYUP exit qualifies you for all PG programmes — M.A., M.Sc., M.Com, MBA, etc. There is no restriction.
What is the difference between "Honours" and "Honours with Research"?
Under FYUP: 3-year exit = Bachelor's Degree (Honours). 4-year exit = Bachelor's Degree (Honours with Research). The "with Research" indicates you completed a research project in Year 4.
Does the 4-year degree help for UPSC?
Not significantly. UPSC requires a Bachelor's degree — both 3-year and 4-year qualify. The extra year doesn't give any advantage in UPSC selection. However, it costs you 1 year of preparation time.
Which is better for MBA — 3-year or 4-year degree?
3-year degree is sufficient for MBA admission (CAT, XAT, GMAT). Most MBA programmes require a Bachelor's degree with minimum marks. The 4th year doesn't add value for MBA admission.
Is FYUP available in engineering colleges?
B.Tech was always 4 years — it's not affected by FYUP. FYUP applies to B.A., B.Sc., B.Com, and similar programmes. Engineering remains 4 years as before.
