In short: NTA does not publish a neat list of "reasons for rejection", so this guide is built from the Information Bulletin as reported by Careers360 and Aakash. It covers 12 mistakes that can cause verification trouble, a failed payment, a cancelled candidature or an error you cannot fix later. The Session 1 deadline is November 22, 2026, a Rs 500 late window runs until November 26, and the correction window is November 27 to 29. Use the pre-submit audit at the end to catch most problems in 10 minutes.
Last updated: October 28, 2026. I have separated what the rules state directly from what sources only warn about, so you know how much weight each item carries.

How I Rated Each Mistake
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Stated in the rules | The bulletin or NTA guidance says so directly, as reported by Aakash or Careers360 |
| Likely problem | Sources warn it can cause trouble, without naming the outcome |
The 12 Mistakes
1. Signing in with a wrong or unverified account (Stated in the rules)
Registration now runs through MeriPehchaan, and DigiLocker, JanParichay or e-Pramaan verification is mandatory. Your name, date of birth, gender and address are fetched from that account. If the data there is wrong, your form starts wrong.
Fix: Check your DigiLocker details against your Class 10 certificate before you begin.
2. Not matching your name and date of birth to your Class 10 certificate (Likely problem)
Careers360 warns that a spelling error in the name, an incorrect date of birth or a wrong category can cause difficulty during verification.
Fix: Compare every field with your Class 10 marksheet, letter by letter.
3. Taking a poor live photograph (Stated in the rules)
The photo needs a white background, proper lighting, 80% of the face visible including ears, and no mask.
Fix: Take it in daylight, facing a plain wall, with hair and spectacles not hiding your face.
4. Continuing after a photo-mismatch warning (Stated in the rules)
NTA compares your live photo with your DigiLocker photo. If they do not match you can proceed anyway, but the bulletin warns that your candidature can be cancelled in future if impersonation is detected.
Fix: Recapture the photo. If the mismatch persists, your DigiLocker photo may be old or poor, so update it first.
5. Uploading files in the wrong format or size (Likely problem)
The photograph and signature must be JPG/JPEG and the Class 10 document must be a PDF, each within a size range. See the documents checklist.
Fix: Open each file once more after resizing to confirm it is readable.
6. Choosing the wrong paper (Likely problem)
Paper 1 is for B.E./B.Tech. Paper 2 is for B.Arch and B.Planning. Careers360 advises matching the paper to your intended course.
Fix: If you want engineering only, Paper 1 is the usual choice. Take both only if you actually want architecture or planning, because it costs more.
7. Selecting the wrong category (Likely problem)
Careers360 warns that incorrect category information can create problems during verification or admission.
Fix: Select the category you can document later, and keep the relevant certificate ready.
8. Entering wrong qualifying-exam details (Likely problem)
Passing year and board details should be accurate. Eligibility depends on having passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or appearing in 2027.
Fix: Copy them from the certificate, not from memory.
9. Using a mobile number or email already used on another form (Stated in the rules)
One mobile number and one email ID can be used for only one form. A parent's number is allowed. NTA sends all communication to these contacts.
Fix: Use a number and email that are unique to your form and that you can access every day until January.
10. Filing two forms (Stated in the rules)
A duplicate form filed in good faith is settled by keeping the one with a successful payment. Appearing in the exam under two application numbers is treated as unfair means.
Fix: If you lose your password, recover it. Do not start over.
11. Paying twice, or not saving the confirmation page (Stated in the rules)
The confirmation page is generated only after payment succeeds. If it does not appear, check with your bank first. Pay again only if the bank confirms the first payment failed. Careers360 also advises saving the confirmation page, payment receipt and application number.
Fix: Keep the transaction ID, download the PDF the moment it appears and email a copy to yourself.
12. Leaving it for the last day, or assuming every error can be fixed later (Stated in the rules)
NTA does not edit entries after submission. The correction window from November 27 to 29 opens only the fields NTA lists at that time. After it closes, NTA will not accept any PwD/PwBD claim.
Fix: Submit early, review every field before paying and treat the correction window as a safety net, not a plan.
Bonus: choosing exam cities carelessly
You enter four exam cities in order of preference, and NTA allots one of them. Read the exam city choice guide before you fill that section.

What Can and Cannot Be Fixed Later
| Mistake | Can it be fixed? |
|---|---|
| Typo in an editable field | Possibly, in the November 27 to 29 correction window, if NTA opens that field |
| Photo or document problem | Check the correction rules when the window opens |
| Duplicate form | NTA keeps the one with a successful payment |
| Failed payment | Re-pay only after the bank confirms the first attempt failed |
| PwD/PwBD claim missed | Not accepted after the correction window closes |
| Missed the late window | Session 1 registration is closed. Plan for Session 2 |
I could not confirm exactly which fields NTA will open in the correction window, so treat this table as a guide and read the NTA notice when it appears.
The 10-Minute Pre-Submit Audit
| Check | Done |
|---|---|
| Name and date of birth match the Class 10 certificate | |
| Parents' names are spelt correctly | |
| Paper choice matches the course I want | |
| Category is the one I can document | |
| Qualifying exam details are accurate | |
| Four exam cities are entered in order of preference | |
| Live photo and uploaded photo are clear and compliant | |
| Photo, signature and PDF open correctly and are within size limits | |
| Mobile number and email are mine or a parent's, and are unique | |
| Fee is paid and the confirmation page is saved |
What to Do If You Already Made a Mistake
- Do not file a second form. Appearing under two application numbers is treated as unfair means.
- Note the exact error and which field it is in.
- Wait for the correction window from November 27 to 29 and check whether that field is open.
- Read the NTA notice carefully when the window opens, since it lists what can be changed.
- Contact NTA through the helpline on the portal if something looks wrong with your payment or login.
What I Could Not Confirm
I did not find an official list that says "these exact mistakes lead to rejection". Treat the "Likely problem" items as risks, not guaranteed outcomes. The Information Bulletin on jeemain.nta.nic.in is the final word.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most common mistakes in the JEE Main application form?
The most common are mismatched personal details, a poor live photograph, wrong paper or category selection, reusing a phone number or email from another form, and leaving the form for the last day. The bulletin also warns against filing duplicate forms.
Can I correct a mistake after I submit the JEE Main 2027 form?
Only during the correction window, November 27 to 29, 2026, and only for the fields NTA opens. NTA does not edit entries otherwise. Check every field before you pay.
What happens if my live photo does not match my DigiLocker photo?
You can recapture the photo, or continue with a mismatch. The bulletin warns that your candidature is liable to be cancelled in future if impersonation is detected, so recapture and fix your DigiLocker photo if needed.
Can two students use the same phone number or email?
No. One mobile number and one email ID can be used for only one form. A parent's number is allowed, so use contact details that are unique to your own form.
What if my payment is deducted but I get no confirmation page?
Check the transaction status with your bank first. Pay again only if the bank confirms that the first payment failed. The confirmation page is generated only after a successful payment.
Is it risky to apply on the last day?
Yes. Portals slow down near deadlines, and payment or upload problems become harder to fix. Aim to submit by early November and keep November 22 as an emergency buffer, not a plan.
